ANEF file blocked: the causes and how to unblock it in 2026
Published on 9 July 2026 · 8 min read
An ANEF (France's online portal for foreigners, Administration Numérique des Étrangers en France) file almost always gets blocked for three reasons: a non-compliant document format, an incorrect permit category, or a missing document. Here is how to identify the cause and unblock your file, on your own or with help.
1. Why ANEF blocks a file (formats, size, category)
The ANEF portal is a fully online procedure: each supporting document is checked automatically when it is uploaded, then manually during processing. A block therefore rarely comes from a bug — it most often comes from a document that does not meet the portal's technical requirements.
The three most common technical causes are:
- An unaccepted file format. ANEF accepts common formats (PDF, JPEG, PNG). A file in another format may be rejected.
- A file that is too large. Each document must respect a maximum size per file: a very high-resolution scan can exceed the limit and cause a rejection.
- The wrong permit category at the start. Selecting the wrong purpose (for example "private and family life" instead of "employee") loads a different form and a different document list, and your file then appears incomplete.
A document that is simply missing or unreadable produces the same effect: the file stays at the "in progress" status without moving forward. A misplaced supporting document is one of the most frequent reasons a file stalls on the ANEF portal.
2. ANEF account blocked: the 4 checks to make
An inaccessible account is not the same thing as a blocked file. Before anything else, run these four checks:
- The login email address. Check that you are using the address the account was created with, and that the activation link received by email has indeed been validated.
- The password. If in doubt, start a reset rather than repeating attempts, which can temporarily block access.
- The browser. Clear the cache, disable extensions, or try another up-to-date browser. Many display blocks come from there.
- Your file number or foreigner's number. A single typing error prevents you from finding or resuming the right procedure.
If, after these checks, the account remains inaccessible, the ANEF citizen contact centre can be contacted. The prefecture alone makes the decision on your application.
3. Document rejected: the formats accepted in 2026
For supporting documents, ANEF accepts common file formats, mainly PDF, JPEG and PNG. Each file must also respect a maximum size per document; the exact figure may change with portal updates, so it is wise to compress your files before submitting.
Three habits strongly reduce rejections:
- Convert to PDF multi-page documents (contract, tax notice) to keep a single clean file.
- Compress scans that are too large with a free tool before uploading them.
- Scan at a readable resolution: a blurred or cropped document will be judged unreadable during processing, even if it was accepted at upload.
A poorly framed photo taken on a phone is one of the first causes of rejection: prefer a scanning app that captures all four edges of the document.
4. How long to unblock or resubmit
Fixing a technical block (replacing a document, changing a format, choosing the right category again) generally takes a few minutes once the cause is identified. However, there is no guaranteed processing time on the prefecture's side: timeframes vary by department and the prefecture alone makes the decision.
One calendar point is, however, essential for a renewal: the application must be filed at the earliest 4 months and at the latest 2 months before the expiry of the current permit (article R. 431-5 of the CESEDA, France's code on the entry and residence of foreigners). A submission outside this window may be closed or trigger a late fee. A blocked file that drags on can therefore make you miss this deadline: act without delay.
If your procedure concerns a prefecture in Seine-Saint-Denis, see our local guides for procedures at the Bobigny prefecture (93) and at the Saint-Denis prefecture (93).
5. Doing it alone or getting help
Many blocks are resolved on your own, by methodically going back over the formats, the category and the documents. If you are comfortable with online procedures and not in a hurry, this is the most economical route.
A private assistance service becomes useful when the block keeps happening, when the renewal deadline is approaching, or when you are unsure of the permit category. Our role is to check each document and the consistency of the file before submission — without ever guaranteeing a result, as the prefecture alone makes the decision.
Is your ANEF file still blocked?
Our experts check each document and the consistency of your application before submission, from 97 €, with payment in 3 or 4 instalments. The prefecture alone makes the decision.

Why is my ANEF file blocked?
Most often for three reasons: a file in the wrong format or too large, an incorrect permit category chosen at the start, or a missing or unreadable supporting document. Identifying which one applies is the first step.
How do I unblock an ANEF account?
Check the login email address and the activation link, reset the password if needed, clear the cache or switch browsers, and confirm your file number. If the account remains inaccessible, contact the ANEF citizen contact centre.
Which file formats does ANEF accept in 2026?
Common formats such as PDF, JPEG and PNG. Each file must respect a maximum size per document: compress your files and scan at a readable resolution to avoid any rejection.
How long does it take to unblock an ANEF file?
Fixing a technical block takes a few minutes once the cause is identified. No processing time is guaranteed: the prefecture alone makes the decision. For a renewal, file at the latest 2 months before the permit expires.
