Change of Status: Student → Employee, Talent Passport, Private and Family Life
Your situation is changing — end of studies, new employer, marriage, birth of a French child — and your residence permit no longer matches? A change of status means resubmitting a file with supporting documents specific to the new status. FrenchPappers handles the complete procedure on ANEF, from 650 €.
Who is this service for?
A change of status becomes necessary as soon as your administrative or personal situation evolves in a way that no longer matches your current residence permit.
- Student who lands a first job (student → employee)
- Employee becoming self-employed or starting a business
- Anyone accessing talent passport status (13 categories)
- Recently married spouse of a French citizen
- Parent of a French child
If your situation stays the same and you simply wish to extend your permit, it is a Renewal that you need. If you are arriving in France for the first time, see our page instead First Application.

Real cases (anonymised)
R., 26 years old — end of master's, hired on a permanent contract
Holder of a student permit, R. lands an engineering role on a permanent contract at 48 k€ gross. The skilled-employee talent passport strategy was unsuitable (salary too low for the threshold), so we directed him towards a standard employee change of status, with the DREETS authorisation obtained in 6 weeks. Employee card issued 4 months after submission.
L., postdoctoral researcher — switching to a researcher talent passport
Hosting agreement signed with a French university for 3 years. Researcher talent passport file built with the agreement, contract and proof of degree. 4-year card obtained, with a family talent passport for the spouse in parallel.
N. — marriage to a French citizen, change to private and family life
Marriage celebrated 6 months earlier, shared life attested by several material pieces of evidence. Cover letter structured around the shared life project and change of status to private and family life validated within 5 months. 1-year card then a 4-year multi-year card at renewal.
Frequently asked questions
What is a change of residence permit status?
A change of status consists in applying for a residence permit belonging to a category different from your current permit: for example, moving from a student permit to an employee permit, or applying for a talent passport from a temporary permit. The procedure is entirely on ANEF, with a file specific to the new status.
Student who lands a permanent contract: what to do?
With a master's or equivalent degree and a job offer on a permanent contract, you can apply for a change of status to employee (or benefit from an APS — Temporary Residence Authorisation — for 12 months beforehand). The procedure requires a DREETS work authorisation and a specific ANEF file. Minimum salary: 1.5 times the minimum wage (SMIC) for the standard employee route.
When should you switch to a talent passport?
The talent passport (13 possible categories: skilled employee, researcher, business founder, investor…) is generally more advantageous than a standard permit: a 4-year renewable card, spouse and children included without a separate procedure. It is intended for profiles meeting criteria of degree, remuneration or professional project.
Marriage to a French citizen: automatic change of status?
No. Marriage opens a right to stay but does not trigger an automatic change of status. You must submit an application for a private and family life card on ANEF, with the marriage certificate, proof of shared life and supporting documents relating to the French spouse.
Is a change of status always granted?
No. The prefecture may refuse if you do not meet the conditions of the new status (degree, resources, work authorisation), or if it finds that you are outside the legal window (for example, expiry of the student permit already recorded). A poorly built file increases the risk of refusal. FrenchPappers locks in compliance before submission.
Is FrenchPappers a law firm?
No. FrenchPappers is a private administrative assistance company, independent of any public authority. We are not lawyers and do not provide legal advice within the meaning of the bar. For an appeal against a refusal, we refer you to a partner lawyer in immigration law.
