The 7 technical errors that block your submission on the ANEF

You spent hours gathering your documents, and just as you go to submit your file on the ANEF, the portal rejects your attachment or blocks your application without any clear explanation. This scenario is experienced every week by thousands of foreign nationals in France. TheANEF (Application Numérique des Étrangers en France) is technically demanding — and a simple formatting error is enough to suspend your file, sometimes at critical moments. This guide explains the 7 most common mistakes and how to fix them.

1. File format not accepted

The ANEF only accepts files in PDF for almost all supporting documents. JPEG, PNG, DOCX, or any other format leads to an automatic rejection of the document.

Solution: Systematically convert all your documents to PDF before submission. Free tools such as iLovePDF, Smallpdf, or printing via "Save as PDF" in your browser do the job very well.

2. File weight too high

Every attachment on the ANEF is subject to a size limit (generally 4 MB per document). A high-resolution scan of a passport can easily exceed this limit and cause a silent rejection.

Solution: Compressez vos PDF avant le dépôt avec un outil en ligne (ex. iLovePDF > Compress PDF). Aim for less than 3 MB per document to keep a comfortable margin.

3. Insufficient scan resolution

Conversely to the previous problem, a document scanned at too low a resolution (less than 150 DPI) will be judged illegible and rejected during processing. The prefecture must be able to clearly read every piece of information.

Solution: Scan at 200-300 DPI. If you use your phone, use a dedicated scanning app (CamScanner, Adobe Scan) rather than a simple photo.

4. Expired or outdated documents

The ANEF and prefecture officials check the validity dates of every document. Proof of address more than 3 months old, an unupdated tax notice from year N-2, or an expired employment contract can immediately block the processing of your case.

Solution: Check the issue date of each document before submitting. Proof of address must be dated less than 3 months old. Payslips must cover the last 3 months.

5. Wrong application category selected

The ANEF offers several pathways depending on the type of permit requested. Selecting the wrong category (e.g. "private and family life" instead of "employee") loads a different form with different required documents. Your file will be incomplete without you being clearly informed of it.

Solution: Make sure you correctly identify the purpose of your application before starting the entry. If in doubt about your category, consult an expert before beginning.

6. Non-compliant ID photo

The digital photo must meet precise standards: white background, face forward, no glasses, size 35×45mm, file weight under 500 KB in JPEG. A portrait taken with a smartphone without verification may be rejected.

Solution: Use a compliant ID photo service (pharmacy, La Poste) or the official online tool available on the Administration's website. Avoid photos taken at home.

7. Session expired during entry

The ANEF automatically disconnects sessions after a period of inactivity. If you take too long between two steps (searching for a document, preparing a file), your session expires and some of the data you entered is lost — but the application can remain stuck in an "in progress" state in your account.

Solution: Prepare all your documents in advance, before opening the ANEF session. Ideally, create a digital folder with all the documents named and ready, and only start the procedure once everything is finalized.
