Increase in Residence Permit Taxs on 1 May 2026: What Concretely Changes

Since 1 May 2026, the cost of obtaining a residence permit in France has increased significantly. The tax at the standard rate goes from 200€ to 300€, and the reduced rate doubles from 50€ to 100€. If you have an application in progress or plan to file a request, here is what you need to know.
The new rates in detail
These increases stem from the decree published in early 2026 as part of the finance law. They apply to all new applications filed from 1 May 2026 onwards.
| Tax | Before 1 May 2026 | From 1 May 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Standard rate (temporary residence card, multi-year card, resident) | 200 € | 300 € |
| Reduced rate (student, researcher, ICT trainee, certain profiles) | 50 € | 100 € |
| Stamp duty (OFII sticker) | 25 € | 25 € |
Which permits are affected by the standard rate?
The standard rate of 300€ applies in particular to the following permits:
- Temporary residence card (CST) — employee, private and family life, visitor…
- Multi-year residence card (CSP)
- Resident card (10 years)
- EU long-term resident card
- Talent passport and its variants
- Change of status
Who still benefits from the reduced rate of 100€?
Certain profiles keep a preferential rate, now set at 100€:
- Students (first permit and renewal)
- Scientists-researchers
- ICT trainees and ICT secondees
- Au pairs
- Beneficiaries of subsidiary protection
Warning: refugees recognised by OFPRA are exempt in tax, this point does not change.
What does not change
The increase applies only to the administrative tax. The documents required, the processing times and the ANEF procedures remain identical. The OFII stamp duty (25€) is also unchanged.
Impact on applications in progress
If your application was filed before 1 May 2026 and you have already paid the tax at the old rate, you have no additional amount to pay. The filing date is what counts.
However, if your application is still being prepared and you have not yet made the payment, you will be subject to the new rates as soon as you finalise your application.
How is the tax paid?
Payment is made directly on the portal ANEF when you file your application, by bank card. It is not possible to pay in cash or by cheque. The payment receipt is a supporting document to keep.
