Talent passport 2026: categories, conditions and benefits of the card
Published on June 16, 2026 · 8 min read
Are you a qualified professional, a researcher, an entrepreneur or an artist, and you want to settle in France for the long term? The talent passport — now called the "Talent" residence card since the law of 26 January 2024 — is undoubtedly the most advantageous route. A single card, valid for up to 4 years, which also covers your family. But beware: each category has its own conditions of diploma, pay or project. Here is the complete guide to the talent passport conditions in 2026.
1. What is the talent passport ("Talent" card)?
It is a multi-year residence card (valid for several years at once, up to 4 years) intended for foreign nationals whose profile or project is of interest to France: rare skills, research, investment, business creation, recognised talent. Since 2024, the official name is "Talent card" and it groups together several designations corresponding to distinct categories.
2. The main categories
The talent passport covers around ten profiles. Here are the most common:
| Category | For whom? | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Qualified employee | Executives and graduate profiles recruited in France | Diploma (master's) or experience + salary ≥ threshold (see §3) |
| Business creation | Holders of an entrepreneurial project | Real and serious project, diploma or experience, investment |
| Researcher | Researchers and lecturer-researchers | Hosting agreement with a research organisation |
| Artistic and cultural profession | Artists, performers, authors | Proof of income linked to the artistic activity |
| National or international renown | Talents recognised in their field | Proof of established notoriety |
Non-exhaustive list. Other designations exist (investor, company director, medical profession, employee of an innovative young company…). Check your eligibility on a case-by-case basis.
3. Conditions of the "qualified employee" category
This is the most requested category, notably by graduates changing status after their studies. The main conditions in 2026:
- An employment contract of at least 3 months with an employer established in France;
- A diploma equivalent to a master's (Bac+5) or, failing that, recognised professional experience of at least 5 years in a comparable position;
- A gross annual salary at least equal to the threshold set by decree: 39,582 € gross/year (i.e. about 3,298 € gross/month over 12 months) according to the scale in force in 2026.
4. The benefits of the Talent card
- Multi-year card: up to 4 years from the first issuance, compared with 1 year for a classic employee permit;
- No prior work permit: unlike the classic employee status, the employer does not have to go through the work permit procedure;
- Talent — family: your spouse (married or in a civil partnership) and your minor children obtain a card of the same duration, with the right to work;
- Mobility and stability: fewer renewals, and therefore fewer procedures and administrative stress;
- A path toward the long term: the Talent card facilitates later access to a 10-year resident card.
5. The application procedure
- 1. Identify the category that matches your profile;
- 2. Gather the documents: passport, proof of address, employment contract or business plan, diplomas, and the documents specific to your category (hosting agreement for a researcher, proof of investment for an investor, etc.);
- 3. File your application online on the ANEF (Administration Numérique pour les Étrangers en France, the digital portal for foreign nationals in France), or as part of a change of status if you are already in France;
- 4. Follow the processing, obtain your receipt (récépissé) then your card.
6. Talent passport or classic employee permit: which to choose?
If you meet the conditions (diploma and salary), the Talent card is almost always preferable: longer, more flexible, and advantageous for the family. But if your salary is below the threshold or you don't have the required master's level, the classic change of status from student → employee remains the right entry point. The right choice depends on your exact situation: diploma, type of contract, level of pay.
Frequently asked questions
Does the talent passport still exist in 2026?
Yes. The scheme was renamed "Talent residence card" by the law of 26 January 2024, but the principle remains the same: a multi-year card for qualified and project-driven profiles. Many people still call it "talent passport" out of habit.
Can my family join me?
Yes. Your spouse and your minor children can obtain a "Talent — family" card of the same duration as yours, with authorisation to work in France.
Can I go directly from student status to the talent passport?
Yes, if you meet the conditions of the target category (for example "qualified employee": master's + salary ≥ threshold). This is a change of status, to be filed before the expiry of your student permit.
